          The contribution of literacy to economic growth & development is significant. It builds capacity of the individual to contribute & sustain in modern world. One should not forget that, growing economy must have the potential to generate prosperity & wellbeing for its citizen & there should be more equitable distribution of benefits. For this, better management of natural resources is required. Development, what we achieved today, has to be sustained for years to come. And such Sustainable Deve l opment i s only po s s ibl e wi th Environmental Literacy.

          Environmental literacy is the capacity to understand the interconnection between human & their environment and to act accordingly. It draws upon six major areasenvironmental sensitivity, knowledge, skills, attitudes & values, personal responsibility and active involvement. Environmental literacy has to be spread at individual & community level with sense of belonging. It is a need of the hour. To spread action based environment literacy, Government of Maharashtra has launched an ambitious scheme- Environmental Service Scheme (ESS). This will certainly help in achieving environmental literacy.
