Topic for Discussion : Attitude towards living beings around us…
(Posted on: 5 th November 2009) |
We share our beautiful environs with living beings like plants, birds, insects, snakes etc. All these are important part of life on this planet as they play vital role in maintaining environmental balance & provides us with invaluable natural services. Many of us do know about their significance and still don’t often pay attention to their plight. We come across various incidents of illegal tree cutting, killing of wild animals like birds, snakes etc., during our day to day life. But, it doesn’t always lead towards any action for their protection and conservation. On the contrary, there are some people, who go beyond this thinking and work wholeheartedly for protection of these creatures during unmanageable circumstances also.
Here we can look in to the incidence, where two brothers worked hard during midnight hours of Diwali, to save an injured Rock Python. The six feet long python was found around 9 pm along the Mumbai-Pune highway, near Lonavala with its head ‘badly bruised’ and neck tied with rope. As the python was still alive, at first help was sought at Lonavala itself but the effort failed, and the snake, weighing 6-8 kilos was then brought to Pune at around 11 pm. Since the Rock python is a Scheduled I animal (Wildlife Protection Act, 1972), legal permission is required to treat it at home. So they took the snake to Katraj rescue centre, where the doctor was unavailable even though the centre was informed before. Then tirelessly at around 2 am, they took the snake to the doctor’s residence far away from the rescue centre. After the first aid treatment the snake was moved to rescue centre. All these timely and compassionate efforts saved the life of the Rock Python. (For more details, visit:

The incidence throws light on a very rare attitude in the present day society, where people think about self before helping others. Truly speaking, there is need of propagation of such approach among all of us, which will help us save our environment in the true sense: for our own selves and for our future generations.
You can share any such incidence around you; your comments or views about this issue. |

Selfcentered society doesn't bother about injured person on road. But people like Mr Dharmaraj when act whole heartedly to save Python, give life a new meaning...We all are trying to achieve something (don’t no exactly what..) and in this process we forget that we are part of this nature. We should live in harmony with it. How one can leave Python with badly bruised head and neck tied with rope? How people cut trees? or allow others to do so?.. All these things are part & parcel of our life. Man alone can't survive on this planet. We should protect & conserve all natural resourses. If we are truly democratic, we should let animals to live their lives....

One such incident is that of a Recreation Ground outside Nerul Station (East) next to NNMC Hospital, where trees have been cut for extension of the hospital. Was there a need to destroy the Recreation Ground?

In my recent readings this kind of news like snake, wild animal spotting was very common. Some news gave very shocking figures of rescued snakes like in Uran, Navi Mumbai. Since the beginning of this year in Uran itself 80 to 100 snakes of various varieties per month were spotted and rescued, which is an unusually high number. This is mainly happening because of the rampant mud-filling, and loss of greenery, where these animals live and survive. In recent years at Phunde village near Uran, which is famous spot for migratory flamingoes, flamingoes have stopped coming may be because of nearly 60 acres of wetlands have been totally filled with mud and debris.
Human development is hurting quite a few of its original inhabitants. Activities like quarrying disturbed quite a few species & landfills are uprooting many others from their home. A lot of animals like snakes, civet cats, jackals, wild boars and even porcupines etc have been dislodged from their natural habitat. The rampant activities, taking place in every region in the name of ‘Development’ are very damaging towards wildlife. In the discussed scenario, the hard work of two brothers Raghunath Patil, Dharmaraj Patil is very appreciable. We all have to workout in same manner for wildlife; at least we have to make up our minds towards the Wild life Conservation because all these are important part of life…. It’s a kind of chain… which we have to maintain intact for our future generation. Or else our future generation will have to see wildlife in books, films or in museum.
I think ‘Development’ is necessary, but it should be ‘Green Development’…!!!! |

My Green Salute to all of you,
Man learn everything from his past mistakes. Man used environment as itst own way. environmental unbalance made by man make his own life unbalance. environmental distarbance making a huge changes in the earth climate and alternately its affecting the human life as everybody know verywell.
For environmental unbalance protection, conservation and awareness government has implimented various kinsds of programmes. one of them is Environmental Education in Schools and college level. its a good step to protect the environment but fact is that environmental education is a practical subject not only theotical. Government should recruit Environmental science graduates or post graduates candidates as they have good knowledge about the environmental protection and convervation. If government is really want to take big step to protect towards environment with the help of school and college student then their should be environmental science candidates appointment is essential on full scale. with the help of this school and college student help to develop city pollution control with tree plantation (with one tree behind one student scheme). suppose if there is a 10000 student in a city then 10000 plants will planted every year which will great help to protect environment.
its my own opinion...

Incidents are observed as animals like leopards meet with accident on the roads passing through forest areas mainly in city like Mumbai. During the days around Makar Sankranti, it is observed that many birds get injured due to thread used for kite flying. Many of the animals lose their lives, as they do not get timely help and proper treatment. Sometimes, a small injury can also take toll of a stray/wild animal’s life due to unhygienic conditions, microbial infection and formation of maggots in the wound. This usually happens due to peoples’ ignorance/ fear towards the animals e.g. all snakes are venomous is a very common misunderstanding among the people.
I appreciate the efforts of all those people who are involved in rescuing the lives of injured animals and birds and their rehabilitation. I personally have not rescued any wild animal in unmanageable situation except helping my mother in some instances like taking care of infants of squirrels and pigeon, which had fallen off from the trees in our compound to save them from cats and dogs and also a mongoose and cats attacked and injured by dogs.
I also remember an incident (about 3 years back) when we happened to save the life of a stray cat that had a deep cut in his chest. We tried our best to give him the first aid and succeeded to stop the bleeding. However, the cut was so deep that we had to take help of a Mumbai-based NGO for performing the surgery on the cat. Fortunately, the cat was survived, but this treatment he got nearly after 22 hours after we found him injured. Though we had a tough time while taking care of the cat, we were very content at the bottom of our heart when he got completely cured. In the entire process, we found positive response from the cat for the treatment and later, we also found a true friend in him.
One can achieve great satisfaction in saving an innocent’s life. Hence, it is important to make sure that the injured animal gets timely and right treatment. However, this is not always possible due to lack of resources like trained personnel, medicines for animals etc. Hence, public awareness is required in this regard. What a layman can do is to provide at least first aid to the injured animal and then rush for higher treatment, if required. Generally, the first aid can be given to the injured animals like cleaning the wound and applying turmeric/ ointments that we usually apply on our wounds. If required, one can contact one of the few NGOs having helpline and animal ambulances which provide free medical help at your doorstep for pets as well as strays. However, for all this one should initially have love, affection and kindness towards all kind of living beings around us; as they are also the part and parcel of the ecosystem. |

Conservation of nature and natural resources is todays need. Either conservation or loss of species of different living beings is influenced by our attitude towards them.
The great social worker Dr. Prakash Amte gives protection and treatment to many injured wild animals in their Hemalkasa Institute in Gadchiroli district. This is an ideal example to our society and helps in conservation of wild animals.
In my recent reading I read the news, one citizen save the life of one bird "Black shoulder kite" which was injured during Makar Sankranti due to thread used for kite flying. After giving treatment he then leave that bird in the nature.
These are the good things to give respect towards nature and other living beings. These will help to make people aware about the nature and conservation of other living beings.
