Topic for Discussion :Combating Climate Change…..Are we ready to contribute?
(Posted on: 1 st June 2010)

It is observed that now a day everybody is talking about climate change. But to cope with it there is serious need to act now. There is need to find adaptive ways for more vulnerable sectors like water, agriculture in changing climate scenario.

There is an urgent need for concerted action involving various stakeholders in society for conservation of our resources. It also provides opportunity to people to enhance climate literacy and develop programme of action on Climate change. The effects of climate change imply that the local climate variability that people have previously experienced and have adapted to is changing at a greater speed. This important aspect has to be shared. Everybody, who observed changing climate, its effects & all related information, must share this knowledge with experts, policy makers. To do this, we facilitated an interactive forum dealing with this topic.

I am a regular visitor of your website. It's nice to see that State Environment Department is involved in such type of activities of making awareness among people about various issues. The climate change is not totally a new phenomenon. It's happening from hundred to thousands of years but its intensity or we can say that its severity has been increased in this 2-3 decades. Various regions of our state like vidarbha are facing the problem of lower rainfall. In this year, summer temperature has reached upto 46- 48 degree celcius in various parts of our state including Dhule, Jalgaon districts. As compared to previous years, increased temperature was observed in Nasik and Pune too. Last year, monsoon visited Mumbai in the month of July which normally arrives in the first or second week of June. Again this year monsoon is on time. These fluctuations reflect that the climate change is actually happening at local level too.

I came to know through your website that the State Government has signed the contract with TERI for assessing climate change vulnerability and adaptation strategies for Maharashtra state. As this is the proactive step from Government of Maharashtra, all of us must take our individual share for minimizing the causes of climate change through modifying our lifestyle in a greener way.

The temperature is one the prime factor for existence of life in the ocean. The global warming is major problem as far as climate change is concerned. Most of the marine invertebrates in the tropical and sub tropical are living at their optimum critical temperature since they are stenothermal i.e. they can not tolerate wide range of temperature fluctuations. The quite unnoticeable impact is also observed on the marine invertebrates. The increasing temperature will gradually decrease the diversity of the existing species of marine invertebrates as they can not tolerate the temperature and they will eventually die. Subsequently the biodiversity of the ocean will be lost.
